The students in our No More Victims program come from broken homes. A parent is likely to be in prison and the rest of the family may live in extreme poverty. As the head of our volunteer committee, I coordinate with our snacks team leader to provide them with food and personal items. So I see their needs first hand.
CURTIS’ STORY
I want to tell you about a young man I’ll call Curtis. His homelife is so difficult that Curtis often sleeps outside with the family dogs to escape the chaos that goes on inside. When he first joined No More Victims, Curtis hid that he had an eight-year-old brother at home because he was afraid authorities would take the boy away. On Friday afternoons, Curtis comes to the No More Victims Director, Marilyn Gambrell’s office to fill his backpack with snacks. Why? Because it may be the only food he and his brother will have to get through the weekend. He is not alone in that, many of our students go hungry.
WHAT DOES A CAKE WITH CANDLES ON IT MEAN IF YOU HAVE NEVER HAD ONE?
Our program also feeds the spirit of our children. We hold a birthday party with a cake every month because so many of our students have never had one. A cake may not seem like much, unless no one has ever cared about you enough to give you one. Happy birthday is just a song, unless no one has ever sung it for you before.
NO MORE VICTIMS CHANGES LIVES
I’ve seen the change first hand. I’ve seen every senior in No More Victims graduate from high school, each year and I’ve seen them not only stay out of prison, but then go to college, trade schools, the military and work!
And I’ve seen it by providing what so many of us take for granted, food! I’ve seen teenage boys and girls who are able to stay focused in class and with happier dispositions, because we provided a nutritional snack just when they needed it, every day.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE
Will you help us change lives too? Giving Tuesday is just around the corner. Join the movement by signing up to be a monthly donor or making a one-time gift. You can contribute on Giving Tuesday, November 27th, or you can contribute now and have it count towards our Giving Tuesday total.
